Material Data Safety Sheets (MSDS)

Each department should have copies or access to Material Data Safety Sheets for each chemical or substance that is being used within their department. The sheets should be maintained in a central location in binders that are clearly marked "MSDS" or departments can post the link referenced below so ready access to this information is available as needed. These sheets are important if anyone should become exposed to the respective chemical. The sheets should be copied and made available to the employee or health care provider to treat the employee. The sheets can also be used to determine how to properly store and use the chemicals. Below are examples of MSDS. Your chemical or substance vendor should provide you with a MSDS sheet for any product that they distribute. Also, you can contact Environmental Health and Safety to obtain copies of MSDS or to explain any questions that you have from reading a MSDS. EHS has MSDS sheets for all products used at the University and they are available online at http://www.safety.fsu.edu/msds.html If new chemicals are obtained, you should verify that it is in the electronic database. If not, contact EH&S to have it added.
