Ms. Jessie Spraggins, M.S., Art Therapist, and Ms. Dominica Parrott M.S.W., L.C.S.W., University Counseling Center, have created a support group for the unique concerns and needs of Florida State University student veterans. Ms. Spraggins and Ms. Parrott, who both come from military families, will provide an atmosphere where enrolled student veterans can discuss and work through some of the issues distinctive to their experiences in the military.
Student veterans are often non-traditional in comparison to the average college student. They have dealt with life events that many college students have never experienced. Thus the issues and challenges that student veterans face as they transition to university life are unique and may not be adequately met by services directed towards civilian students.
The group will run for 6 weeks, October 15, 2008 through November 19, 2008, on Wednesdays 1-2:30 pm at the University Counseling Center. For information please contact Ms. Jessie Spraggins, M.S., at (850) 644-2003.
Florida State University has been pre-selected by the service-learning advisory committee for inclusion in the inaugural edition of the Guide to Service-Learning Colleges and Universities. General information about service-learning in higher education will be included as introductory material in the Guidebook, based on information resources acquired from the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse. The Guide will profile four-year colleges and universities as well as two-year institutions and community colleges that are leaders in service-learning. Selected institutions demonstrate that they integrate community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities while using a deliberate and planned approach in order to fulfill the standards of service-learning.
