CGE Welcomes New International Students

New International Student Orientation

Thursday, January 5, the Center for Global Engagement welcomed more than 100 new international students from 31 countries. Our new students join Florida State University's more than 2,400 international students from 125 different countries and areas.

This semester students came from countries such as Panama, India, China, Venezuela, Iran, and Columbia, and top fields of study include finance; electrical, mechanical, and chemical engineering; computer science; sports management; and economics.

Our international students are well accomplished, earning accolades from the university for the high quality of their work on teaching/research, in the arts for their superb performances, creative genius and amazing talent, as well as in the sporting world for their athletic accomplishments. We are excited to welcome them to FSU’s main campus.


2017 Global Café Dates Announced

Spring 2017 Global Cafe Dates

Select Fridays | 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. | The Globe Dining Room 
Experience a variety of cuisine and cultures from around the world at The Globe's featured program – the Global Café held on select Fridays starting at 11:30 a.m. This student-centered program was designed to increase awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity on our campus. Spring semester Global Café dates and hosts include:

  • January 27, China, Chinese Student Organization 
  • February 10, Philippines, Filipino Student Organization
  • February 24, Italy, National Italian Honor Society
  • March 31, Dominican Republic, Dominican Student Association & Hispanic/Latino Student Union

Global Café provides the opportunity to spend a culturally enriching lunch hour eating authentic food from around the world, listening to music, and meeting students from the featured culture. Student groups and staff prepare lunch from authentic recipes and serve it to guests in the Globe Dining Room for just $7. This event is open to the public. Qualifies for the Global Citizenship Certificate

International Coffee Hour – Every Friday | 5-6:30 p.m. | The Globe Lounge & Dining Room
U.S. students, scholars, and faculty gather for coffee and snacks every Friday. It's a great place to meet new people from various parts of the world, see old friends, and make plans for the weekend. Qualifies for the Global Citizenship Certificate


English Conversation Club – Every Monday-Friday | 4-5 p.m. | The Globe Lounge
International students, scholars, and their families at all levels of speaking English as a second/other language are invited to meet in a relaxed atmosphere to practice conversational English. Groups are led by experienced English tutors.


Global Citizenship Drop-In Advising – Tues. 10 a.m.-12 p.m. | Wed. 1-3 p.m. | Fri. 1-3 p.m. | The Globe Suite 1200
Drop-in advising hours are for any student who wants to learn about the Global Citizenship Certificate. This certificate prepares FSU students to succeed in a diverse and multicultural world. Learn more:


Global Ambassadors Program (G.A.P.) Info Session – Fri., Jan. 13 | 4-5 p.m. | The Globe Room 2300
All international students, scholars, and faculty are invited to participate in the Global Ambassadors Program. Through this program, you will make presentations in schools and at civic organizations about your home country and culture, become Cultural Ambassador for your country, promote global understanding and awareness, gain public speaking experience, receive a Global Ambassador Certificate. Please fill out the online application, or email with any questions.


Optional Practical Training (OPT) Workshop (for F-1 international students) – Fri., Jan. 20 | 2-4 pm | The Globe Room 2400
Note: Only for those registered. All F-1 international students nearing graduation are required to attend an OPT workshop (in person or online) if they are interested in working in the U.S. after graduation to gain experience in their field of study. The next OPT Workshop is March 10.


Global Partner Certificate: Bridging Cultures I (for Faculty, Staff & Grad Students) – Fri., Jan. 27 | 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. | The Globe Room 2300
The Global Partner Certificate is a Center for Global Engagement professional development initiative for those interested in improving their intercultural communication, knowledge, skills, and awareness, as well as becoming more globally competent. This certificate recognizes an individual’s commitment to understanding and appreciating cultural diversity at FSU. Participants must complete all four workshops (in order) and three intercultural events offered on campus and/or in the Tallahassee community. Visit the CGE website for details.


Global Café - China - Fri., Jan. 27 | 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. | The Globe Dining Room
This week is co-hosted with the Chinese Student Organization. Open to the public. $7 cash or check only. Qualifies for the Global Citizenship Certificate
