The mission of the Black Male Initiative (BMI) is to assist Black males with their transition into both the Florida State University and the Tallahassee communities. Through mentoring, academic integration, leadership and service, and social integration, BMI is designed to meet the scholastic and social needs of all Black males on the campus of Florida State University. This is done in an effort to support campus and community involvement, graduation, matriculation to graduate school and/or a successful employment post-graduation.
The purpose of the establishment of the BMI was to bring together a group of dedicated individuals who have an invested interest in the holistic development and success of Black males at Florida State University. The BMI places a special emphasis on recruiting and retaining Black males as they persist to graduation and beyond.
The specific goals of the BMI are:
- To provide students with a continuing orientation to the university and community life.
- To help students connect with other students in the university.
- To offer students a variety of support mechanisms.
- To guide students on a pathway to achieving student success while in college.
