So tell me, 00:00:25:03 - 00:00:30:13 Amy Hecht what is global exchanges and how is it different than international programs? 00:00:30:15 - 00:00:34:02 Leigh Ann Bauer Well, global exchanges provide FSC students a really immersive 00:00:34:03 - 00:00:46:14 Leigh Ann Bauer experience where they're able to study at a university in another country for a semester, for a summer or even academic year. And really giving them that experience of living in another country, taking classes 00:00:46:16 - 00:00:50:14 Leigh Ann Bauer there, getting to know local students and travel as well as part of it. 00:00:50:16 - 00:00:55:00 Amy Hecht That is amazing. What else should they consider in terms of credits 00:00:55:02 - 00:00:58:12 Amy Hecht or cost? How is global exchanges different in that way? 00:00:58:12 - 00:01:04:00 Leigh Ann Bauer Well, cost. The great thing is they students pay FSU tuition and fees. So the same amount that 00:01:04:00 - 00:01:07:03 Leigh Ann Bauer they're paying when they're here on campus. It goes with 00:01:07:03 - 00:01:07:04 Leigh Ann Bauer them. 00:01:07:04 - 00:01:08:17 Amy Hecht Regardless of what country they go to? 00:01:08:19 - 00:01:12:23 Leigh Ann Bauer Exactly. Yes. So in any financial aid that they have, bright futures 00:01:13:01 - 00:01:19:00 Leigh Ann Bauer or prepaid, all of that applies as well. So it keeps the costs really affordable. Others are more specific to like College of Business has a number of exchange agreements that they've identified just for College of 00:02:01:14 - 00:02:02:08 Leigh Ann Bauer Business students. 00:02:02:10 - 00:02:09:22 Leigh Ann Bauer But depending on the major, we can usually find a good fit, particularly if the student has a lot of flexibility in their classes and they've done some planning ahead 00:02:09:22 - 00:02:13:00 Leigh Ann Bauer of time to really make it fit within their academic goals. 00:02:13:00 - 00:02:21:18 Amy Hecht Now, Eva, you're they're the only Florida State student in Thailand, which isn't unusual. But what was it like? Did you have any culture 00:02:21:20 - 00:02:24:01 Amy Hecht shock? What's your favorite memory looking back? 00:02:24:03 - 00:02:30:20 Ava Oh, I mean, when it comes to culture shock, I would talk about with my international friends every day that every single day we were culture 00:02:30:23 - 00:02:31:11 Ava shocked. 00:02:31:11 - 00:02:36:14 Ava There was never a dull moment. I just remember first getting there, coming from the airport, kind of getting 00:02:36:14 - 00:02:43:04 Ava out of the throes of Bangkok when I was driving with my taxi driver, who was actually one of the nicest people I've ever met. 00:02:43:05 - 00:02:44:21 Ava It was fantastic. Experience, 00:02:45:02 - 00:02:48:01 Ava experience. You went by James Bond was his name, by the way. 00:02:48:04 - 00:02:48:16 Ava 00:02:48:20 - 00:02:51:12 Ava Yes, exactly. But I remember getting to where I 00:02:51:14 - 00:02:56:07 Ava was living and feeling a little bit overwhelmed. I was like, this is very different 00:02:56:10 - 00:03:04:10 Ava from what I'm used to living in and all that stuff. So every day, just discovering a new area of Thailand would always be a culture shock. 00:03:04:11 - 00:03:05:10 Ava I mean, just with the 00:03:05:15 - 00:03:06:20 Ava way people act, 00:03:07:02 - 00:03:25:16 Ava how welcoming people are, it really puts southern hospitality out the window. Is it is next level how welcoming the culture is. So there's a lot of things getting used to there. But also, for example, bartering when you have to barter for, you know, get a deal on something, something I really had to get used 00:03:25:18 - 00:03:27:07 Ava to allow was there. 00:03:27:09 - 00:03:37:04 Ava But when it comes to memories, I it's impossible to even narrow it down. But one of my favorite ones was just we had been traveling. I did a lot of 00:03:37:04 - 00:03:39:17 Ava outside travel, which I could also talk about, but, 00:03:39:17 - 00:03:42:16 Ava we had been to a bunch of big cities, Hong Kong, 00:03:42:18 - 00:03:47:13 Ava Kuala Lumpur, a bunch of places. And so we wanted more quiet experience. 00:03:47:15 - 00:03:52:16 Ava So I went to northern Thailand and Chiang Mai, the massage capital of the world. 00:03:52:18 - 00:03:55:20 Ava we were just visit temples and eventually a group of 00:03:55:20 - 00:03:59:20 Ava monks was walking with us, and they ended up just taking us on a tour, 00:04:00:01 - 00:04:06:07 Ava through all the temples of Chiang Mai. Not because of any other reason. They just wanted to show us around. 00:04:06:13 - 00:04:07:10 Ava And so we ended up 00:04:07:10 - 00:04:12:04 Ava doing just some things with monks, and they would tell us the best things to get at 711. 00:04:12:07 - 00:04:16:22 Ava And that was just one of the most grounding experiences I've ever had. 00:04:16:22 - 00:04:21:19 Amy Hecht Talk about a once in a lifetime experience. Yeah. And what is the top thing to get at 7-Eleven? 00:04:22:01 - 00:04:23:00 Amy Hecht Oh the monks. 00:04:23:00 - 00:04:27:09 Ava Oh my gosh. I mean, first of all, they would have all of the they have a bunch of Thai 00:04:27:12 - 00:04:36:08 Ava teas and stuff. But I would always follow behind the monk to see what kind of drink they're getting, because I know it's the best and it's probably in Thai and I can't read it. 00:04:36:08 - 00:04:41:06 Ava So that but a very popular thing is having cheese toasties, which is really funny. 00:04:41:09 - 00:04:41:15 Ava And 00:04:41:15 - 00:04:43:07 Ava now I call them toasties because that's what the 00:04:43:07 - 00:04:44:07 Ava Europeans call them. 00:04:44:08 - 00:04:44:16 Amy Hecht Very good 00:04:44:20 - 00:04:45:00 Amy Hecht name. 00:04:45:00 - 00:04:45:16 Ava Though. What was your 00:04:54:12 - 00:04:58:10 Amy Hecht biggest takeaway now looking back on your experience in Thailand? 00:04:58:12 - 00:05:01:12 Ava I mean, my biggest takeaway is that I feel like I can 00:05:01:14 - 00:05:07:02 Ava do anything. I, I did a lot of very adventurous things when I was over there. 00:05:07:02 - 00:05:10:15 Ava I also did some solo traveling. I've actually 00:05:10:19 - 00:05:14:00 Ava been now to ten countries this year alone, 00:05:14:04 - 00:05:22:18 Ava eight of which were on my exchange. And so I feel like I can navigate any type of transportation, any type of cultural barrier. 00:05:23:00 - 00:05:23:17 Ava I feel like I can 00:05:23:17 - 00:05:33:13 Ava establish a common ground with absolutely anyone that I talk to. I feel a lot more confident in going around the world and just pursuing whatever endeavors I have, like academically 00:05:33:15 - 00:05:38:04 Ava or career wise. I just feel a lot more confident, and that's amazing overall. Yes. 00:05:38:07 - 00:05:43:07 Amy Hecht And great for your future career as well. Who wouldn't want to hire someone with those skills soundly? So 00:05:43:10 - 00:05:47:13 Amy Hecht if a student is interested, how do they get started? What's the process? 00:05:47:15 - 00:05:53:06 Leigh Ann Bauer The best way to get started. Just come to an information session. We have them here in the globe building twice 00:05:53:06 - 00:05:53:18 Leigh Ann Bauer a week. 00:05:53:18 - 00:05:57:21 Leigh Ann Bauer Also on zoom. Just come in and talk to us, start to make a plan. 00:05:57:23 - 00:06:01:19 Leigh Ann Bauer The sooner the better. We definitely want students to start planning this 00:06:01:23 - 00:06:03:12 Leigh Ann Bauer out. You know, about a year in advance. 00:06:03:12 - 00:06:09:23 Leigh Ann Bauer But even if they come in about a few months before the deadline, we can get them going. So the sooner the better. But, 00:06:09:23 - 00:06:15:15 Leigh Ann Bauer just start exploring and don't be intimidated by, you know, the thought of of what you may 00:06:15:20 - 00:06:17:19 Leigh Ann Bauer not be able to do if you don't do this. So 00:06:17:23 - 00:06:23:01 Amy Hecht So what advice would you both have for a student that is applying? 00:06:23:03 - 00:06:25:07 Ava Well do it. And 00:06:25:09 - 00:06:35:08 Ava and also definitely find a location that is going to fit you like full rounded like you want an all encompassing experience. Feel like sometimes, 00:06:35:10 - 00:06:44:00 Ava people really get caught up in the where they want to go, to be honest. Like regardless of where you go, you're going to get a lot out of it. 00:06:44:00 - 00:06:45:06 Ava But I would just focus 00:06:45:08 - 00:06:55:06 Ava more on somewhere that really speaks to you. It doesn't have to speak to you in one category. Let it find everything and apply. Definitely. Just do it all. Make sure you're all 00:06:55:06 - 00:06:59:06 Ava organized throughout the process. Don't lose track of documents or anything, right? 00:06:59:06 - 00:06:59:23 Amy Hecht Yeah, 00:07:00:01 - 00:07:04:19 Amy Hecht okay. Good advice Liam. What about what advice would you have? 00:07:04:21 - 00:07:09:05 Leigh Ann Bauer I think just, you know, hearing stories, like stories like Ava is as far as the, 00:07:09:08 - 00:07:12:18 Leigh Ann Bauer the benefits it can get out of it, out of this kind of experience. 00:07:12:18 - 00:07:18:20 Leigh Ann Bauer I think really is something that I love to hear those kind of stories, but thinking too 00:07:18:20 - 00:07:23:05 Leigh Ann Bauer about the connections that students make and how that can impact the rest of their life. 00:07:23:05 - 00:07:25:20 Leigh Ann Bauer So it's a relatively short period of time. You were 00:07:25:20 - 00:07:35:17 Leigh Ann Bauer there for four months, but the impact on on Ava's life and on so many students that we've worked with over the years, it really carries with them, you know, in so many different, 00:07:35:20 - 00:07:42:07 Leigh Ann Bauer unexpected ways. So having that in mind and thinking of the immediate experience they're going to have, but also the bigger 00:07:42:07 - 00:07:42:13 Leigh Ann Bauer outcome 00:07:42:16 - 00:07:44:06 Leigh Ann Bauer that they can have for the rest of their life. 00:07:44:07 - 00:07:56:22 Amy Hecht Absolutely. Not to make things spicy was a big one. But with that 00:12:31:12 - 00:12:38:11 Ava being said, your classes are in English unless otherwise specified. Like if you wanted to have a very catered program 00:12:38:13 - 00:12:43:07 Ava where you are proficient or comfortable learning in the host language, you could do that. 00:12:43:07 - 00:12:51:03 Ava But otherwise you do not have to worry about those language differences.
