Curriculum Overview 2023-24*

Leadership experts from Student Affairs or related fields in higher education will give presentations on the following topics.
 

Month 1: September 19  |  Program Kick-Off and Cohort Welcome with Dr. Hecht

Outcomes:

  1. Participants will understand the program's structure and objectives.
  2. Participants will engage in meaningful introductions and networking within the cohort.
  3. Participants will explore key ethics, values, trends, and opportunities in the field of Student Affairs.
  4. Participants will establish a foundation for their learning journey in Student Affairs.

Month 2: October 17  |  Framing Your Career Path

Session(s):

  • Lunch Panel - Article Discussion
  • Building your plan - Using the Goal Setting Template

Outcomes:

  1. Participants will gain insights into various career paths within Student Affairs through open discussions.
  2. Participants will develop personalized career goals and action plans using a Goal Setting Template.
  3. Participants will learn strategies for framing their own career paths and professional development.
  4. Participants will be equipped with tools to take proactive steps toward their desired career outcomes.

Month 3: November 9  |  Professional Development with Ainsley Carry and Mike Scales

Outcomes:

  1. Participants will grasp how organizational culture shapes strategic decisions.
  2. Participants will acquire skills to implement innovation effectively.
  3. Participants will learn to collaborate within collective action contexts.
  4. Participants will engage in informed dialogue and discover collaboration opportunities in the domains of student affairs and higher education.

Month 4: December 12  |  Leading at a University

  • Coffee and Conversations

Outcomes:

  1. Participants will engage in meaningful discussions about leadership in a university context.
  2. Participants will learn from experienced leaders in Student Affairs through a coffee and conversation session.
  3. Participants will gain insights into effective leadership strategies specific to higher education settings.
  4. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of their potential roles as leaders within universities.

Month 5: January 16  |  Staff Management and Student Affairs in Practice

  • Managing and Mentoring Staff Workshop
  • Student Affairs in Practice Workshop

Outcomes:

  1. Participants will acquire skills in managing and mentoring staff members in a Student Affairs context.
  2. Participants will explore best practices and practical strategies for staff engagement.
  3. Participants will apply theories and concepts of Student Affairs in real-world scenarios through questions and answers.
  4. Participants will establish goals to foster a positive campus environment.

Month 6: February 13  |  Lessons in Leading and Higher Education Policy

Session(s):

  • Coffee and Conversations - Lessons Learned in Leading in a Student Affairs Division
  • Higher Education Law and Policy Workshop

Outcomes:

  1. Participants will benefit from the shared experiences of Student Affairs leaders during communication and policy.
  2. Participants will gain insights into higher education law and policy relevant to Student Affairs.
  3. Participants will analyze current policies to better understand the application of policy in practical situations.
  4. Participants will enhance their ability to make informed decisions within legal and policy frameworks.

Month 7: March 19  |  Exploring Leadership Styles in Student Affairs

  • Exploring different leadership styles and their application in Student Affairs
  • Developing effective leadership strategies for different situations

Outcomes:

  1. Participants will examine different leadership styles and their relevance at different types of institutions.
  2. Participants will develop a nuanced understanding of how to adapt leadership styles to various situations.

Month 8: April 16  |  Conflict Resolution and Effective Communication

  • Interactive conversation and activities to practice conflict resolution skills.

Month 9: May 14  |  Financial Literacy in Student Affairs (FSU Representative per Cassandra)

  1. Participants will gain foundational knowledge of financial management at FSU.
  2. Participants will understand budgeting and resource allocation principles specific to Student Affairs.
  3. Participants will identify opportunities for optimizing financial resources.

Month 10: June 18  |  Reflection and Action Planning

  • Final Reflection and Action Plan

Outcomes:

  1. Participants will reflect on their journey throughout the program and its impact on their growth.
  2. Participants will synthesize key learnings and insights gained from the curriculum.
  3. Participants will develop a comprehensive action plan for their ongoing professional growth in Student Affairs.
