The New Student Survey (NSS) collects information from incoming first-time-in-college (FTIC) and transfer students related to academic and co-curricular engagement, college perceptions, career aspirations, and well-being. By knowing about the experiences and characteristics of incoming students, faculty and staff can better prepare to serve students. As a complement to the Graduating Senior Survey (GSS), the NSS can also be used to compare the experiences of incoming students to their experiences and perceptions at graduation. In the past, FSU participated in national surveys related to student engagement, and this project fills a gap in local knowledge.
The NSS instrument was developed by the Strategic Planning & Assessment team in consultation with over 20 campus partners.
The instrument is distributed before the beginning of each semester to all incoming students at the Tallahassee and Panama City campuses via email. Students receive an initial invitation and reminder emails.
Survey items are analyzed using Excel, STATA, and Power BI.
